Websites Are the Front Door to Spirituality

The Pilgrimage United Church of Christ has gone through considerable congregational changes over the past decades; much of those changes involved several rounds of reflection of their non-traditional Open and Affirming values. The new challenge to these practices was how to communicate them consistently and effortlessly throughout the digital mediums to both their existing members and to those expressing curiosity and/or interest.

My specific work with this project was not only the design and creation of their new brandmark, but the design and photography of their online web presence. Much of the discussions involved the understanding of how their website should not simply be a 24/7 billboard advertisement; but—based on the aforementioned values being practiced—the website becomes the new ‘front door’ to welcome both new visitors and returning members alike. Relevant color choices, actual member photography, clear navigational word structure, and ease of content update (WordPress) by the volunteers were critical to its content success. That no matter where the website visitors are on their own respective life journey, they are welcome at Pilgrimage!
